YK-11 is a research chemical that’s grown in popularity during the last few years, even though it’s not as well-known as its big brothers Ostarine and Ligandrol.
But even though it’s not as popular as those SARMs, YK-11 has a very unique property that makes it a worthwhile compound to consider.
YK-11 is a myostatin inhibitor.
Maybe you don’t get much out of that information, but you’ll probably get your mind blown after I explain what that’s all about:
Myostatin regulates how much muscle you have..
Believe it or not, your body doesn’t like too much muscle.
It’s very bad from an evolutionary perspective. Muscle constantly demands calories to maintain itself, and beyond a certain point, you don’t get much use of additional muscle mass.
That’s why your body produces something called myostatin…
Myostatin is a protein that regulates your skeletal muscle mass. It sets a limit to how much muscle your body can grow.
How much myostatin your body produces is individual. Some produce very high levels and have a hard time putting on muscle. Some produce less myostatin and have naturally more muscle mass.
I remember back in high school when I and some lifting friends talked to a science teacher about myostatin. We learned that there was a certain breed of cows that are bred to produce extremely little myostatin, and thus have incredible amounts of muscle without any anabolic steroids or other compounds:
Due to their lack of myostatin, their muscles also don’t grow like in a normal cow or human:
Normally, when your muscles grow, it’s your existing muscle cells that grow larger. This is called hypertrophy.
But these cows grow more muscle cells because their existing cells have already grown as large as they can get. This is called hyperplasia.
It’s not only cows that are born with a lower myostatin production.
Bodybuilders with great genetics have low levels of myostatin in their bodies as well. Which is why they can surpass the genetic ceilings of normal people without touching any anabolics.
Okay, so now you know what myostatin is — it regulates how much muscle your body packs on.
But what is a myostatin inhibitor?
What Is A Myostatin Inhibitor?
If myostatin egulates how much muscle your body packs on, a myostatin inhibitor prevents myostatin from working on your muscle cells.
This allows you to surpass the muscle-building threshold that is hard to surpass even with anabolic steroids and SARMs.
YK-11 is a myostatin inhibitor. It works by increasing higher levels of Follistatin expression.
Follistatin is a myostatin antagonist that negates the effects of myostatin. (A few years ago internet websites began selling Follistatin due to this property, but the follistatin every shop sold was extremely expensive and turned out to always be bunk. Don’t buy pure follistatin!)
However, the increased follistatin expression from YK-11 allows you to surpass this muscle-building threshold — in theory.

The most interesting part of YK-11:
It’s not only a myostatin inhibitor… it’s also an anabolic steroid and SARM.
When you read about SARMs online, you often read that they are not anabolic steroids. In most cases, that’s correct. The popular SARMs you find today are non-steroidal (Ostarine, RAD140, and LGD-4033).
SARMs are not anabolic steroids. But that doesn’t mean some anabolic steroids are not SARMs.
The only criteria for something to be classified as a SARM is that it exhibits tissue selective anabolic activity.
For example, trenbolone is one of the most powerful and side-effect ridden steroid of all time. It’s also a SARM, which contributes to the great power it has.

YK-11 Results: Are They Worthwhile?
There are very few studies on YK-11. If you want something that is more well-studied… go for anabolic steroids or more mainstream SARMs like Ostarine or LGD-4033.
But based on what we can logically deduce from the few scientific studies, we know some of the effects you get from YK-11. It’s also supported by anecdotal evidence from bodybuilders:
In one study, YK-11 inhibits myostatin in individual muscle cells.
No animal or human trials have been conducted with YK-11, however. That means we don’t know if YK-11 has any real-life effect at all, even less if it has negative side effects.
But when you dig into anecdotal logs from bodybuilders and athletes, you get the picture that YK-11 has some noticeable anabolic effect. Just listen to Ryan Russo talk about his experience with YK-11:
In another study, YK-11 increased the birth rate of cells that develop bone.
Because of this, YK11 could help your bones grow stronger, as well as prevent and reverse bone wasting diseases.
Since YK-11 is a DHT derivative and selective of muscle cells, we can assume it shows similar effects to other DHT derivatives. For example, Masteron, Superdrol, and Primobolan.
One thing they are known for is their powerful cosmetic effect — they make your body look more hard and dry. It’s only noticeable when you’ve got low body fat, which is why DHT derived steroids are popular among bodybuilders about to compete in a show.
Does YK-11 Convert To Estrogen?
Another good thing about YK-11:
Since it’s a DHT derivative, that means it can’t aromatize into estrogen. And since DHT derivatives also have strong androgenic effects, you’re very unlikely to experience estrogen relate side effects.

What Side Effects Does YK-11 Have?
Just like every other anabolic steroid and SARM, YK-11 suppresses your natural testosterone production.
The more YK-11 you take, and the longer you take it for, the more decreased your natural testosterone will become. That means you will absolutely need to perform a proper PCT after a cycle.
YK-11 is methylated. It’s been chemically altered to survive the acids in your stomach and make its way into your system, which also makes it liver toxic in the process.
This is the case for any oral steroid. It just needs to be toxic for your body to absorb it orally. (Non-steroidal SARMs don’t need to be methylated, on the other hand)

Any derivative of DHT is bound to give you iandrogenic effects, those that are characterisic of males:

- Increased growth of body hair

Most athletes take 10 mg of YK-11 per day. This is most likely an arbitrary number, but in general, it seems as if that dosage gives you results without too many side effects.
The half-life is unknown. And when in doubt, spread it out. Split the dosage into several daily doses to maintain steady levels in your blood.
Do You Need A PCT?
As I mentioned before, YK-11 suppresses your natural testosterone production. Because of that, you need to perform a PCT to get back to healthy testosterone after your cycle.
YK-11 is an interesting, albeit obscure, SARM which has little scientific studies backing it up. I honestly think there are other SARMs that appear to be safer, more well-studied.
