To build his physique, Serge Nubret followed an unusual diet. He was born in Guadeloupe, a French group of islands in the Caribbean. Because of that, he just ate normal Caribbean food when he started to train in February 1958. Back then, he had no idea that steroids or even protein powder existed.
Although Serge obviously wasn’t natural during his prime (read more here), he still had amazing genetics and work ethics.

The Food Choices of Serge Nubret…
In Guadeloupe, there had always been an abundance of fish. In Serge Nubret’s early days he ate a lot of grilled fish, barbecued chicken, rice and so forth.
Later in his bodybuilding career, his diet changed as he became more and more legendary:
For most of his competition days, he ate lots of red meat, rice, beans, and lentils. Sometimes 6-8 pounds of red meat a day when preparing for competition. He also ate chicken, fish, steak, rice, vegetables, and fruits.
Early in life, a major part of Serge’s protein intake came from horse meat. He ate 8 pounds of it in one sitting in the evening.
At an older age, Serge switched out the horse meat to beef.
Serge Nubret ate quite a low amount of carbs every day. Usually 100 grams per day. But Serge felt that he had to listen to his body, so when he felt the craving for a pizza… he’d eat one!

Cows eat all day, but panthers eat once per day.
That’s what Serge used to tell his friends, and he considered himself to be more of a panther.
Serge did not eat breakfast and often skipped lunch. At most he ate two meals per day. But his main meal was always in the evening.
Conclusion On The Serge Nubret Diet
Based on what we know about Serge Nubret, we can conclude that he followed something akin to intermittent fasting. Decades before it became adopted by the mainstream!
He also ate very wholesome, unprocessed food.
Today that is considered optimal for both health and bodybuilding.
One thing to keep in mind is that Serge trained a lot.
He worked his abs for an hour every day and did 5-hour workouts all week long. This forced him to eat an insane number of calories to sustain his muscle mass. Hence the 6 pounds of meat every day.
Unless you’re as big, and work out as much, as Serge, you should lower that calorie intake if you decide to mimic his diet.
